"Read the Masks, Tradition Is Not Given" is an artistic take on the Dutch tradition of Sinterklaas (Saint Nicholas), one of the most popular festivities in the Netherlands, and specifically at the Zwarte Piet figure (Saint Nicholas' assistant, known as Black Pete), who is represented by numerous white children with their faces painted black. In addition to an installation and a public debate, the authors organized a demonstration with local activists and anti-racism groups to publicly express their criticism of the Zwarte Piet phenomenon.
